
The Vice President of External Relations serves on the UA President's Cabinet and is responsible for all activities that promote the UA, especially those that involve the UA and media, government officials, and UA friends, supporters and neighbors. Close ties between the Vice President for External Relations and leaders of the UA Alumni Association, the UA Foundation and the Arizona Health Sciences Center enable a galvanized effort to advance the UA in the state and beyond.

Steve MacCarthy joined The University of Arizona in May 2007 as Vice President for External Relations. His background includes 11 years at Penn State, where he was Vice President for University Relations. Prior to that, Steve spent nine years with the California State University System, the last seven of those in charge of Public Affairs and University Relations for what is the largest university system in the country. He is a graduate of San Diego State University, and began his career as a comedy writer in Hollywood after winning a national writing contest sponsored by 20th Century Fox. He moved from television to advertising, first with a computer software firm and then as creative director at an advertising agency. He then spent time in politics as a press secretary and speechwriter before moving into higher education.
