Office of the Vice President, External Relations

The Vice President of External Relations serves on the UA President's Cabinet and is responsible for all activities that promote the UA, especially those that involve the UA and media, government officials, and UA friends, supporters and neighbors. Close ties between the Vice President for External Relations and leaders of the UA Alumni Association, the UA Foundation and the Arizona Health Sciences Center enable a galvanized effort to advance the UA in the state and beyond.

Steve MacCarthyJaime Gutiérrez has been named UA Vice President for External Relations. He will serve in this position until a permanent vice president is named.

Jaime joined the University of Arizona in 1993 as Assistant Vice President and Special Assistant to the President. Most recently he has been Associate Vice President for Community Relations, responsible for neighborhood relations and outreach, local government relations, supervision of the University Visitor Center and visitor services, University Events and community outreach partnerships.

Prior to joining the UA, Jaime served as an Arizona State Senator for 14 years. During his final two years in the Legislature, he served as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Chair of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and Chair of the Senate Ethics Committee. Previous positions include President of the City of Tucson Industrial Development Authority, a quasi-governmental public agency, and several positions within the Pima County Juvenile Court Center.

He is involved the Arizona Minority Education Policy Analysis Center, serves on the board for the Community Food Bank and Children's Action Alliance and has been involved in dozens of other community projects and organizations.

Jaime is a Tucson native, attended Salpointe Catholic High School and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Arizona in 1971 and has completed graduate work at the University of Arizona.
